Q: Do female firebelly toads make noise?
Posted By:

In Relation To:

Today my male firebelly toad grasped my female firebelly toad, but grabbed between her back legs with one arm, thus pinning her leg up against her body. While this was happening the female toad was making a chirping noise. So, my question is, do female toads make noise? I sexed them with the toe length method, so it is possible that I am wrong about their genders.

(The brown toad on my page is the female and the green the male)

It is possible that you are worng, but many female frogs and toads do make some noises, but will never call. The best way to find out is to get a recording of the males call and play it back in loop and watch to see who calls back. Under the right condtions it shouldn't be long before your's start to call just keep a good eye on them and if one never calls it's too young of female. Female frogs will get pissy and make a good amount of noise when bothered, Darts are common for this, as well as Horned, and even some tree frogs, in my experince.

Female FBT's can make noise, usually only when startled or attacked.  I accidentally dropped my female and she make a single sharp chirp like sound.
